A dogs diet starts with it's owner. Cut out treats and table food completely.
Switch to a decent dog food (yet they even have diet dog food) and feed the dog accordingly...don't fill his bowl when it's empty. The dog dish should only be down on the floor for him to get it twice a day....not snacking as he pleases.
Also, start taking him for walks. It will do him good to get out and exercise...won't hurt you either (not implying you are overweight).
Work with your pet...and he will lose the weight.

You do not say if the problem is you or the dog. If it is table scrap problem start all eating at the same time and quit snacking so that your dog does too. You know the saying bout the owner and pet resembling. Get just a high protien low fat dry dog food. Does not have to be diet. Put down the recomended food and let that be it. May split it up to be twice a day. Also play and walk the dog daily. Like us the activity of the dog is as important as the food.

I have dieted my dogs. They generally eat a 1/2 cup the the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening. (small dogs) When I diet them I cut it back to 1/3 in am and pm. Plus less snacking on treats, etc. It actually makes them feel alot better when they take the excess off.
My dogs don't like to switch food or I would get them the diet stuff.

I agree with Johnny. What kind of food you feed your dog is a big factor. When preparing to purchase food for your dog remember that if one of the first three ingredients is corn, cornmeal, or any by-product, stay away from them. What food do you feed your dog? Is the type of food you feed adequate to the breed type and size? i.e. large breed, small breed, and etc. There are companies out there such as Nutro, Royal Canin(does breed specific foods), Iams, Eukanuba, that make foods specific to the size and life stage of the pet. Hope this helps and good luck with your dog!

Call your vet back and ask if they carry Hill's Science Diet r/d. It is a high fiber diet, and you do not have to reduce the amount you feed your dog.
