I have taken Keflex for infection before I had a root canal on an infected tooth. The key is to take the medication for at least a week before you go back to the dentist, so that the infection has time to be eliminated before any dental work is done.

Cephalexin (Keflex) at a dose of 500 mg 4 times daily is a good choice for a dental infection, although ciprofloxacin 500 mg 2 times daily is only $4 a prescription, affords wider bacterial coverage, and offers better bone penetration (the blood supply of the tooth - which is the route the antibiotic must take - is rooted in bone).

Amoxicillin is usually our "go to" antibiotic for non-specific dental infections, but Keflex kills pretty much the same germs.
Dr. Russo has given you the correct dose.
