WWI:
Mons, Somme, Ypres. Passchendale, Thiepval Wood, Serre Road, Cambria. When almost 1 million british and commonwealth troops were slaughtered. Where were the Yanks? They didn't arrive until 1917, when the hard work had been done.
Sorry, but I am a little P.ssed off with you lot telling me how you saved our "Butts"

I share a passion for correcting American's on here about the wars that THEY have "WON", it's never been about the fact that England doesn't even today appreciate all the American soldiers and airman, etc, that gave there lives for in the First World War a stupid cause, and in the Second World War a just one. It's the perception of the Wars that do my head in, your history and films show you as strong, brave, courageous, and out and out winners all by yourselves. We in Britain are shown in our history a more rounded version of events, we don't big up ourselves, we realise that without the distraction of the Eastern Front and the Russians, that even with the Americans help the allies wouldn't have gotten of the beaches, let alone to Berlin.
Just do me and Zulu a favour and show some HUMILITY, if you don't know what it means look it up....

I wasn't going to answer this until i saw the previous answer about we were broke. That's not true, we were certainly broke after the wars.
If you take a step back at look at the world power struggle in the 20th century you will see that the two world wars were the final nails in the coffin for Britain's empire.
Similarly the USA did very well financially from the UK, in case you don't know we are still paying the USA for helping in the war now although the debt has almost gone thank god.
It was very difficult for the USA to enter the war politically, you know the war of Independence was not that far back in their history and besides they didn't feel they were that involved at first.
So it took a lot of "sweeteners" for them to enter, we actually bought 5 old battle ships off them, at a huge price, even though they were on their way to be decommissioned for scrap.
In short we borrowed a huge amount from the USA and what many people don't realise is that much of the USA war effort was NOT free, we paid for it. After the war we were totally broke as a country and the USA launched into a great golden age.
So did the yanks help us ? they sure did, but not for free, everything had a hidden price tag that took us 60 years to pay off.

Not to be rude to the British people but... WWI was an European War. It had nothing to do with the U. S. It was the British and the French who requested the U.S. to come in and assist. Look at the Numbers. How many more soldiers could Britian have been able to throw in and regain the Offensive ?? At the time Britain had pretty well thrown in all that it could. To have thrown in anymore would have costed more than Britain was will to pay. Same for the French. The additional soldiers that came from the States were the decideing factor, as history has already shown us. If the U. S. had decided not to show up and throw their weight in, Britain and France would have had to settle for Peace. Britain and France had maxed out their capacity for war. Germany could have held and waited Britain and France out for favorable peace treaty.
So in a sense. Yes the U.S. came over and saved your "Butts". and while yes they didnt come over there til 1917, the Hard work just began. The drive to push the German soldiers out of their trenches and rout them all the way back to Germany.
As for the Over here, Over Paid and Over Sexed ??
IF they weren't over there then where would they have been ??? Kinda hard to save the day sitting back in the States isn't it ??
Over Paid ?? How can you set a price for freedom and saving a COuntry from disgrace ??
Over Sexed ?? Well I havent read too much about any females screaming rape !! So I guess that means they were willing participants.

Oh my goodness. World War One? "The Great War?!" You mean, "The War To End All Wars?" Now THAT was REALLY a stupid war. You're right. Where were the Yanks? Jeeze, I dunno. Something to do with painfully watching the Brit.s launch a major offensive at the Somme and losing over 20,000 in the first hour? And how long did THAT particular battle rage? Almost a half year? For the Americans who listend so fervently to their bias news broadcasters reporting the number of dead (Americans) in Iraq, you might take heart in knowing that your "good old American know-how" has turned the art of war into a science. When you combine all combatant countries and their losses in WW I, that works out to roughly 98,000 per month. And to further drive that point home, (someone mentioned D-Day in WW II) Patton wasn't allowed to engage his Third Army until the beachhead had been secured. Once landed, their push towards Germany meant they lost on average, 1,000 men per week in the Third Army alone!.
WW I was a direct result of the political wranglings of von Bismark, who'd been removed from office almost thirty years prior. Unfortunately, none of the world leaders had sense enough to see what was coming or how to side-step it once it had arrived.
It's a sad fact that a smart man will figure out a way to avoid the fight, but it's a smarter and stronger man who will know that when all else fails... War is stupid. Been there and fought in a few. My best to your Grand Father!

Blah blah blah, you just cant stop talking shite can you? I lived in the States for 10 years, and in all that time I never met anyone who put us down, they hold us Brits in high esteem. God knows why, all we do is moan about the Government, Taxes, the Yanks, The NHS and then cant be bothered to vote. I'm sorry about you Grandfather and your Dad. But shouldn't we try to be building bridges instead of butting heads with our biggest allies, The average American Is decent and hard working they were duped just like us over this war in Iraq. I expect you will write something now that shows I've just wasted my time trying to explain anything to you, you seem to know everything,Have you been to America?

Guess I don't read enough of the answers from across the sea to get the picture you're getting but remember that the noisiest vessel is an empty one, Unfortunately Daniel C says it well and I'll add to it that "history is written by the winners"
Good example is if you see how differently the history is taught and perceived either side of the Irish border and yet they're only down the road, they could come check themselves but they don't
There's plenty of wonderful people in the US, I've met them, and they don't believe the bullshit, they think for themselves, just like you and me

Sorry my fellow Americans are always repeating this popular phrase: "we saved ur a$$es!", I know it's not completely true.
I understand what you complain about since we did get into the war(s) way too late.
Our citizens in WWII had to be lied to by FDR in order to even gather suppport for it,
Americans in general did not care about Jews or the British, they felt it was 'Europe's problem".
I don't ever say that phrase, I think it is said by Americans almost tongue in cheek sometimes...(you would be speaking German right now if it weren't for...!)
It also gained popularity because it's in a number of movies (always stated comically) Like Austin Powers.

Here's what you both fail to notice:
In different countries there are different perspectives on how events took place. In one country, it is taught that the war was mostly won by them. In the other country, it is taught that they did all the "hard work." I'm sure in Russia it is taught that the Soviet Union won the second world war. Here in the US, it's taught that the US did all the work.
And like the first guy said, "get over it!"
We get it, you don't like Americans. This would explain your use of the phrase "ignorant Yank" in the details. If you're going to call 300,000 people ignorant, just because you don't like them, then maybe you shouldn't be on Yahoo! Answers.
