My name is Shannon. I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I lost my job (illegally) when I was forced to take a leave of absence to receive treatment. I have been able to find free legal services to help me fight my wrongful termination, but I have been told it may take months to see any results. I am now unemployed, unable to pay my rent, and have lost my health insurance to pay for the medication that I so desperately need.
The company that makes my medication has a program for indigent patients, but it takes over a month to process the paperwork & receive medications (if chosen). I become extremely suicidal without this medicine. I cannot wait a month for treatment.
I would never dream of asking for charity until now - I personally believe that should be reserved for families with children - but I am ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE. I only have a few more pills left.
Does anyone have any advice? Charity websites, organizations that might help, etc.? Thank you so much!

Talk to your doctor, he may be able to point you in the direction of help. How about contacting a mental health charity...they may know of a scheme that will help you. Sorry not to have come up with more for you, its an awful situation. I hope you get it sorted very soon x

The first thing you should try is applying for emergency Medicaid. If you can get that, it's your best bet. Although social services is in general a very lacking system, medicaid prescription coverage really is the best there is. It pretty much fully covers everything if you are eligible.
Like someone mentioned earlier, asking the doctor for samples is always a good idea. It never hurts to ask. If it happens to be a newer medication, s/he may have a lot of samples to give out.
Here's a couple of links for other medication assistance programs

Look up: www@astrazeneca.com on your computer. Contact them and explain your situation. They may be able to help you. Also, I realize that you are currently unemployed and unable to pay your rent, but you say you need your medication. There is a drug card that, if your medication is covered with their plan, the card can give you a % off. The name of it is Peoples Prescription Plan. When I applied years ago, it was $7.95 per month; when I saw it advertised on tv. a few years later, it was somewhere between 8-10 dollars (I don't remember the exact figure--sorry) per month. Good luck to you.

If you really want you are eligible for disbilities. But a better option is to find a research program studying bipolar. You will get free medication and doctors. I know University Hospital of Cleveland is big in this and you could contact them to see if they are working with anyone else in your area.

Go to your local F.I.A. & tell them you are applying for EMERGENCY MEDICAID! Explain the situation you are in! I am sure they will help you somehow. They have me!!!!! You can also get on SSI if you have no income coming in to your household. I starts immediately. I think it's now at $350-$450 a month! I know you can make it!!
