I had this problem and the futon is still around and smells great. I actually had it picked up and cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning service. They bought it back as good as new. Of course, I told them about the urine so they would know what to use to get out the smell.

Years have gone by, and I have since learned that you can use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Blot up as much of the urine as possible. (Put an old towel, or something very absorbent over the spot. Then place something heavy, like a big book or even a piece of plywood over the towel.) You can use a garbage can liner to protect the heavy object from the urine. Leave it on for maybe an hour. Then cover the urine with the 50/50 vinegar/water mix.Use enough to thoroughly wet the area. Repeat with the towel and heavy object. Let dry thoroughly. If there is still an odor after it is completely dry, sprinkle on some baking soda and let sit. Vacuum after an hour or so. Before applying anything to the urine spot, have her check the cleaning tags that came with the futon to be sure the material won't be affected adversely.

After her futon is clean again, I would advise her to get one of the mattress covers that is moisture proof in case this happens again. She can cover the mattress cover with whatever, but her futon is protected against any future mishaps.

Whatever she decides to do, Good Luck.

I would try spraying with viniger water and vacuum with a wet dry vacuum. The smell from the viniger will go away in a few hours. It is a general rule that most cats or dogs will not wet on furnature or carpet that has been sprayed with it but sometimes still do. A second choice is called odoban. We got it at ingles, the grocery story. The same as vinager water spray let set and vacuum or wipe dry. It is a pet deodorizer.for accidents.

White vinegar and water equal mix, spray on couch and let dry. Don't worry the vinegar smell goes away. There are also many spray on remedies at the pet store that work-Natures Miracle is what Pet Smart recommended. Good luck.

If you haven't tried urine gone you should get some of it. It really works. I have used it and was pleased with the way it took the smell away. you can get it at cvs, it comes with a black light so you can see if there are any spots you don't know about. There is a phone no. on the bottle where you can order a refill without buying the black light again.

Dog urine isn't that bad. Vinegar will nutralize the smell, and the vinegar smell should go away eventually.

Use a lot of Fabreeze on it. If that doesn't work use vinegar. After that just put it in a place (patio or garage) where it can air out.

The only thing I've heard is don't use anything with ammonia in it, because it will make the urine smell stay longer.
