It is quite a marvel of engineering. 1. The cabin is hanging on an iron rope (in fact there are 4 of them for security - if one brakes elevator stops), 2. Iron rope is rolled in or out over the puley that is on the roof. 3. Puley is driven by electric motor and gears. 4. Electric motor is controlled by electronic circuitry (in very old times relays) that is controlled by buttons you press. Long elevators have sophisticated speed control so they slowly accelerate and decelerate to pass the given distance in smallest possible time. For security reasons if the elevator goes down faster than the prescribed speed it automatically mechanically brakes. Some shorter elevators have cabins installed on the hydriaulik rode, instead of hanging them on a steal rope. That's about as short as it can be.
