My husband has a slightly elevated Cholesterol level. We've been invited to a dinner reception with the following menu choice: Breaded Chicken breast with ham and sauce OR top sirloin with mushrooms and onions. I think the sirloin is the safer choice. I have an issue with the BREADED chicken and the "unknown" sauce. what do you think?

I'd say, for a one time dinner reception order what you want and don't worry about it. If you and your husband eat healthy all the rest of the time and exercise regularly, then that will pretty much control the cholesterol. Eating "illegal" foods once in a long while won't hurt, but obsessing about it can make you miserable.

It's a bit off the subject but my mom used to have high cholesterol. She started taking fish oil for some time and now her cholesterol level is back to normal. It could help your husband too. Doctors generally wouldn't approve of it because it's a natural remedy and is not a "medication". So I can't say consult your doctor before taking it. But I am sure you can find tons of info about it on the Internet or other resources. good luck.

My take on eating restrictions & attending dining functions...is to try to eat something (lite meal) before attending. That way...you don't go hungry and you can merely sample the food (to be polite) without going totally out of your dietary guidelines. Either choice should be fine...he can always just cut off the parts (breading) of the meal that he can't eat.

yeah sirloing is a better choice, though maybe you can ask the chef to make something healthier for your husband.
