There seem to be some parrallels between relgious believers and people who are 'madly in love'.
Both will see the object of their loved one through rose-tinted glasses. Both cannot stand to hear any outsider criticize their love. Both will believe their lover's statements no matter how absurd they might be. Both selfishly cling to the idea of their love and will not consider 'loving' anything else.
Oh, and eventually, both get their heart broken by lies.

Religion is stupididy and gullibility at its finest.

It really depends on which religion you are thinking of. Not all religions believe in God. Or gods and goddesses. If the religion doesn't believe in a higher power as an actual "being", then your theory is a bit flawed. And not all religions are full of lies. Some strive to continue to seek the truth in everything. There are lots of religions/spiritualities out there, many of which you probably never heard of. Do some research. You might end up surprised at what you learn and not feel so negative about the whole idea anymore.

Maybe for some. But not necessarily. When I "fell madly in love with God" the hatred I had for so many people just went away. In the last 40 years, hatred has really not been a part of my life. And I have been progressively learning to love others more. So it is not the selfish type of love affair that does not allow me to love anyone or anything else.
Rose-tinted glasses? What tint do you wear? lol.
But in some people's religious experience, your comment fits, I think.

It seems rather peculiar to see such vitriol concerning religions when in fact, those opposed to it remain in a very small but verbose group. When one considers that 86% of this country has a belief in a higher being, leaves one to consider how a few feel they can influence the many.

Sad commentary and misconception.

- I have a clear view of who God is
- Criticize away. It does not change Him
- Have found nothing absurd about how Christ asks us to live
- Not sure where you see the heartbreak, but I've held the hands of dying Christian friends, who shuffled off this mortal coil in with a peace that you cannot comprehend.

And here come the downed thumbs.....

Religious belief may at times appear similar to being "madly in love" because in a strange way they are. They are not, however, in love with an imaginary being but rather themselves. They love themselves and fear their own mortality which could result in the loss of themselves. This strange combination of fear and love leads to faith (hope?) that they will continue after death.

Friend, you're mistaken.
I haven't ALWAYS been a Christian. For six years, I doubted that God existed. Then I got into Wicca for about four years. Then after another two years of doubting God's existence, I finally came back.
Criticize all you want. You can't hurt ME. But if you're wrong, you're only hurting yourself. That does bother me.
You think Christianity is absurd? I think the twelve years I spent without it is absurd!

Yes it absolutely is! Notice that the more religious they are the more they claim it's NOT a religion it's a RELATIONSHIP. Sorry, but if my husband treated me the way god treats his followers I would divorce his *** and get everything he owns.

Yes. And God is a father-figure carried over from childhood to adulthood. Priests and popes are called "father" as well. The church knows human psychology and manipulation.
