I would just like to say that my husband and I are both in the Air Force, we are "kids" as you say, and many our friends and family have joined different branches of the military, there is no shortage of people going to sign up, the Air Force is trying to get rid of people! I would also like to say to whoever suggested cutting funding for the military: my husband makes $18,000 per year, and I will be making less than that (I leave for basic in January, my husband has been in for a year) and if people want to cut military funding, you are telling me that the brave people that are out there fighting for you everyday are going to get paid LESS than the crappy salary they make as it is now?!?! We struggle, all of our friends here struggle with money, this career field isn't about money, though, we do it for pride in ourselves and love of country and for a better life for our families. I don't think that the people who don't join don't love thier country, they probably all have their little reasons why they wouldn't do it. But that's ok, because if there weren't little whimps who didn't go, who would we be protecting?

I don't think all of them are suitable for the military. Some people feel the street kids and other unemployed and unemployable people should be drafted... but look what would happen to the quality of our military then!
Today's military is highly specialized, and they are better educated and trained for what they do than the general population of this country! They simply do not WANT a bunch of rookies and amateurs, and that's why there is no draft.
Why would people not want to join the military? How about the sad fact that the recruiters lie to them? How about not wanting to go halfway around the world to a place where people are killing their own countrymen?
Old fashioned has nothing to do with it. When our wars were just, our people were willing to fight them.

The military is not for everyone,,, never has been. That is why the draft was such a raw deal for so many.
If we were in the middle of a mess like WW II then it would be different, but we are not and haven't been for a long while. So as long as things are as they are leave the military to the professionals.

1st reason- If the war was worth fighting and I would get facts instead of pretty speeches that only inspire the ignorant, I would sign up in a heartbeat. There are still way too many unanswered questions regarding 9/11 and the current administration has blocked any attempts at a real investigation of the evidence.
2nd reason- Being in the military can put you at a disadvantage--career wise. My boyfriend is the veteran of the Iraq war and him and his fellow veterans have found it difficult getting their lives on track--and finding an appropriate carreer path. In this day and age, college is the only way to make something of yourself, and I don't want to put myself at any further disadvantage by signing up.
Why don't the congressmen/senators encourage their children to enlist if they back this war so much?

Good question, I was thinking that recently and I think it is because we live in a different day and age. Its all about a selfish society, material possessions etc...Its sad really. We all have the ability and freedom to purchase these items and we live freely all due to the soldiers who fought in those world wars and they were kids and they actually wanted to in many cases! Today it is all about taking care of number i first. You have youth who's priorities are getting high, partying, not respecting anyone and doing whatever the hell they please. Don't get me wrong there are others who are not like that but sadly there are not enough!

In this modern day generation we have a bunch of care free wimps. That is why they are not willing to sign up. They would have to do as they were told for a change.
I think conscription in the USA and Canada should be mandatory for all school drop outs, street kids, and the like. Minimum 3 year contract. Either serve on the Parade Square or in the digger! It would do them good; and be a blessing to the North American continent.

Because not every one wants to go into the military, some people actually have a different way of serving their country and their own dreams.. Like for instance, good teachers... If we had more good teachers and cut our military funding by 1/3 and decrease the crap we use in Iraq most of US would be educated and veterans would actually get their benefits..
It seems that oil is more important than American lives..
I always wanted to be a Marine out of patriotism, but now I think differently, I still want to be in the special forces (I like the marines, but I like to be special), but now I realize I don't think I want to aid my country in invading foreign country for no good reason.
Also people and kids don't want to "kill" or get PSTD, I would personally be shocked to see that I sliced a man in half with my 50 caliber sniper rifle and found out that he had 4 kids and a wife who had been threatened to be killed if he had not served..
Of course I'm not a wimp, I have no conscience to bad guys or people who serve the bad guys, but I also don't like people who expects others to do things without considering what their reasons or dreams are.. I would proudly join the United EARTH marines tho, I don't think I want to aid my country in destroying or conquering the world after I see whats happening..
Peace to the troops, **** Emperor Bush and his god damn cabinet boys.. It's the roman empire all over again..
Personally as a 13 year boy, I current hate the way I'm spoiled and I rather join a military that supports peace and mainly defense (there cant be peace if there is no power to enforce it) for the discipline and aiding others. But I rather be educated like a college student, seeing how the military doesn't always pay their soldiers for a full college fund or even send them to college at all.. That's an options I'm considering, full time spent in college educated about biology or computer graphics..etc or more discipline in my life as a marine.

Well as it has been in every generation. Not everyone has the intestinal fortitude to serve their Nation. It takes a special person (Male or Female) to willingly serve their Nation and be prepared to go into harms way. Those who have fled to Canada or elsewhere have come to grips with reality that they do lack the Intestinal Fortitude to serve their Country and have moved. I thank those who have moved as I know now that I could never count on them to help defend our Country.

Because if you are not physically inclined, there is a great probability you would fare poorly in a fight (which is what war is, one giant fight). Combat is for the athletic types, what is a guy suppose to do whose aptitude is like software / web site design, bang the opposition over the head with his laptop ?

Some are very lazy and don't want to be told what to do.
Others worry that if they join and realize it's not for them they can't just quit.
Some worry they could be killed but I think that's just an excuse. You can go to college and die too. I have seen the way some of these college kids act when they party.
