You can use oil pastels the same way as oil paints, layering one colour over another. Yes you can use black and white, but use black sparingly.

Oil pastels are made from the same thing as oil paint - linseed oil - except, unlike the paint, oil pastels never dry. For this reason, the finished work should be framed behind glass.

Cray-pas makes a colourless blender, a pastel with no colour. Use it over top of 2 colours to blend them together, or before applying pastel to get a transparent look. You can also use a Q-Tip dipped in turpentine, mineral oil or linseed oil to thin the colours and blend them together.

Have fun!

well, my recepy opn how to use it would be: just do it!!! LOL. But let me give oyu some tips which can maybe give you more idea on what this technique can, can offer you.
First of all you can use them as any crayons, but you can also mix them on the paper, while working. I love doing that! Just smiudge (I am not sure about the corect english word! you know just mix it making it blory) a new color over an already painted color on the paper surface, and see what happens. Also you can spred it and mix with your finger, when on the paper.
The you can also delute it a bit with terpentine, and see what happens, then. And also you can combine it with oil paint...
so this is what I know about oil pasrels. Hope this helps and enjoy your work! :-)
oh and yes, use any color you like, including black and white!

You can use oil pastels how ever you want. They can be used like crayons if you like. Use white or black is fine. You can use them to darken or lighten a color. Oil pastels work good because they mix and blend two or three colors well.

They are a lot like crayons, only messier, in my opinion, and unlike crayons they have a matte finish. So you can look at the drawing from an angle and you won't see light reflected.

They blend really good, although they tend to have a "roughness" to them, so they are perfect for abstract art and such.
