The answer varies from boy to boy. The only way to really know is to ask. I know that it is awkward, but if you bring it up naturally in conversation then it just seems like an innocent question.
I notice that boys who are more talkative, loud, and humorous like girls to ask them. Boys who seem more macho and self-confident rather than talkative like to be the dominant one and ask.
Something to think about, though, is that you may have to wait around if you want him to ask you. Another thing to consider is that the worst thing he could say is NO, anything else he does makes you feel bad but it is mostly the NO that scares girls. My friend just asked a boy out who she is friends with and he said NO. They are still friends and nothing has changed. Granted that that doesn't always happen, sometimes it does. It is TOTALLY worth it to ask. I suggest trying it once.

I think its good and its certainly different from the normal, if a girl knows what she wants then she should go and get it, my girlfriend asked me out and i wouldnt have changed it for the world. The greatest moment of my life and i think its good when a girl asks a guy out, quite romantic and shows that she knows what she wants.

Shy Guys might have the girls ask them but otherwise Guys prefer to be doing the asking I think...Girls often initiate this anyway they just don't ask the question.

I love it when a guy asks the girl out. I have asked several guys out before and each time it didn't go very well and didn't last very long... maybe it's because they didn't want to tell me no.

I wouldn't say guys prefer one or the other, but it is nice to not always have to be the one to ask.
