Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda, sodium bicarb), two heaping soup-spoons thoroughly dissolved in a bit more than half a pint (12-14dl) of room-temp water, slowly swish and gargle each mouthful, and allow the stuff to fizz in your tongue. Take as long as you can stand it! Then, drink lots of water and other fluids.
BEWARE. The smell of onions and garlic will come out of your pores! A long, hot bath with, bicarbonate of soda (a good mugful or two -- it's very good for your skin, though it tastes vile) will help you sweat the smell out, and help to keep your skin from smelling. If you dance, or perspire at the party, you'll smell of onions. There's no avoiding this.

If you like not the taste, why eat the onion? As others have said. Personally I rather think the easiest way is to eat garlic with the onion, mixed with a mouthwash chaser instead of milk.
Mind, this won't get rid of the onion taste nearly as much as it will (1) help the onion with garlic (2) meld oils from both onion and garlic with the mouthwash, yielding a vile taste exceeded only by that of the breath.
Note, this combination works well to ward of vampires, school children, and most other people, but Bulldogs and other discerning breeds of canines will want to kiss you on the lips.

Try eating a little parsley! I always put it on hubby's plate with the sandwich as I hate the smell on his breath. Dont like cheese/ onion together. I use it myself for onions and garlic (dont eat cheese) IT Works!

To avoid onion smell include parsley in/with sandwich. Chewing parsley after the event works but to a lesser extent

dry bread, chew it all around the mouth, let it absorb any onion in your mouth and teeth. Eat a few mouthfulls, so you kind of create a a layer on top of the onion that went down
Then clean your teeth really well
Then use a mouthwash
Should be OK, but you could go round asking attractive strangers if you can kiss them to see if your breath smells!

I know something that really works but it is not very pleasant.
Put a small spoon of coffee to your mouth, keep it for a while and then spit it and drink water. The other thing that it is the most easy is just to chew a gum!

Suck on a teaspoon. For some reason, stainless steel neutralises strong odours like onion and garlic. Next time you chop onions, run your hands round the inside of your sink (presuming it's a steel one). Smell gone.

Fresh parsley neutralises any bad breath odours (mouthwashes only work if the bad breath is due to bacteria, and onions aren't!)
Also useful are sugar-free mints - Smints for instance. The lack of sugar in them doesn't feed the bacteria in the mouth so they don't smell bad and the mint neutralises the onion.
