I have a one and a half year old english bull dog, he's been potty trained for more than a year now and all of a sudden he's been going #1 & #2 in the house when we're gone at work even though we leave the back door open so he can go outside and do his business, is there any explanation for this and a way to make it stop? I know you're only supposed to punish a dog if you can catch them in the act or right after so it makes it very hard to do anything besides clean it up when we get home.

There could be something going on physically with him and this is the only way of expressing it. Maybe the meter guy sprayed him and hes afraid to go out now. When you clean up the poop take it outside and take him with yo so that he can again be reminded to go outside. There could be something else going on too, if someone new has been in the house that the dog feels that he needs to remind you or someone else that hes the dog of the house, its hard to say for sure.

Okay, this could be a number of things.

1). Has he previously been left home all day? If not, it could be separation anxiety and all you can do is give him toys to distract him. Eventually he will get used to it.

2). Something may have scared him. Is someone in your street doing noisy renovations with loud bangs? The only way to stop this anxiety is to identify the noise, tape it and play it again and again until he accepts it.

3). He might be upset about something. Have you recently acquired a new pet or housemate? If so, he needs to be slowly introduced to them. The new person could give him pats or food. A new pet should get equal treatment to him (eg. it should not sleep indoors and him out).

4). If none of the above seems to help, maybe he is sick. Animals have funny ways of displaying sickness or he could have bowel problems. Consider a vet check up.

Good luck to you & your pooch!!!

Well first take him to the vet, make sure he doesn't have a physical problem causing him to do this. But also, he may be acting out. Maybe he doesn't like being alone while you're at work all day...sure you don't have much of a choice there. But animals can be funky that way, they'll choose to act out. Also maybe he noticed a sent on the carpeting that was previously there that attracts him to it?
Try the vet....and spend as much time with him as possible...maybe get the carpets cleaned? Just some thoughts

I was having the same problem with my dog but it was during the winter, he didnt like going outside cuz of the cold weather. When I would see where he went 1 or 2 I took him to the spot and said no to him, after that when I would find some he would run cuz he knew i was gonna get him in trouble, then he stopped and started going out side. I hope this helps.

Has anything changed in the home? Change can sometimes cause regression. Also, sometimes if you are not paying enough attention to the dog the dog will resort to all sorts of behavior to get attention. You could walk him more and give him longer play periods and You should try using a crate because a dog usually will not soil where it sleeps but if you are not willing to crate your dog maybe you could hire a dog walker.

My pugs are always having accidents... but it seems like they've been doing it more often lately. When I let them out, they often just stand there on the patio, not wanting to go out in the wet grass, cold wind, etc. IF I stand out there long enough with them, they'll eventually go... but they'd definitely rather just use that nice warm carpet. :( Good luck... I bet it's the weather... but you might check with your vet. Maybe attempt paper/pad training him? That way at least if he has to go in the house, he'll learn to go in one spot (preferably in a kitchen or bathroom where if it soaks through it won't do any damage).

your dog has too many choices ... try crate training... when ever he is alone crate him. making sure when you are with him he gets a lot of play time so that crate time becomes "nap time" and if its a long period give enrichment toys...like kong full of kibble ot a yummy treat.

It could be the change in weather temperature and that he doesnt like the cold if you live where it is getting cold.

It's probably his way of indicating that he is lonely, that he doesn't get enough attention.
All pets need lots of attention, so be sure you give it to him/her when you are home. Don't ignore him/her.
