I believe it was the RC Church's way of distinguishing between the two James-es among the chosen twelve Apostles of Yeshua/Jesus [PBUH].

There were 2 James. James the brother of John, and James The Less (meaning The Younger), who was a son of Joseph and Mary after Jesus.
