I think pugs and chi's are pretty much at opposite ends of the whole doggie spectrum. :) Pugs (I have two) are VERY friendly, HUGE cuddlers, goofy, etc. Chi's, from what I've heard and the few I've known, are very high maintenance. They tend to be yappy (pugs rarely bark), they are nervous around new people/places, etc. Not to say they aren't great dogs for those who love them though.

It's also going to depend on the dog though. My two pugs are almost complete opposites of each other. My 5yr old female is the LAZIEST dog EVER! She weighed almost 30 pounds when I got her (I've got her down to 20 and lookin' good). She does play now that I have a young male for her to romp with (they're both fixed!), but she'd much rather just lean up against me as we watch TV. My male on the other hand (2yrs old) is CRAZY! That boy is GOING 24hrs a day! He thinks the house is his Nascar track. He's completely devoid of doggie manners, running over top of the other dogs as they sleep. Ugh.

Pugs are notoriously difficult to potty train, and of the pugs I know, all have occassional accidents (at best!). Both breeds have certain health problems which are more likely to exist. I'd highly suggest researching both breeds to see what best fits what you're looking for. Good luck!

Small dogs tend to be the loud and noisest! Maybe a 'sausage' dog? they seem fairly quiet. You say you 'need' a dog but do you actually 'want' one or are you just getting one because of the novelty? Because it would take up a lot of your time walking it several times a day. If you get a dog cheaply it might mean its not been as well looked after so I'd try looking around and maybe go to some animal shelters that are quite full then they might give you one cheaper. Good luck but owning a dog is a big responsibility so make sure you're prepared for that.

If you are very patient, then go ahead and get a chihuahua. They are very hard to potty train and teaching basic commands is difficult. They need to be socialized with people and other dogs or they will be snippy. They don't do well around little kids, so if you are planning on starting a family soon or will have kids visiting it might not be a good idea to get a chihuahua.
But they are also very loving and loyal. They just take time and patience.

Miniature dachshunds are great!!! Smooth coats are best if you are looking for really low maintenance - about 4 baths a year does the trick and you can do it yourself in the sink or tub. They love to cuddle, go for walks or just lounge. They don't require lots of space. Check akc.org for good breeders! We've always had these little dynamos and would never have anything else!
Pugs have lots of health issues and chihahuas are really mouthy!

Pugs are more friendly in general, chihuahuas tend to defend the owner(s) when people come in the house. I think chihuahuas are annoying. Black pugs are adorable!

How about a Yorkie? They are wonderful...well they do yap a lot, but overall they are sweeties. They are lap dogs and are really loyal. Yorkies are all heart. They love to love. Yorkies, if full blooded, only get between 3 and 7lb fully grown. I have two they are full grown. One weighs 3lbs and the other weighs 3.5lbs. Just a suggest :-)

chihuahua, they are very loyal to their owners, but not many people outside of the home, so most of the time, you dont have to worry about someone stealing it. they are very intellegent as well. i have had chihuahuas for 15 years, and I would never own another breed of dog for myself. they do require a lot of time and effort on your part though. and they are big yappers.

How about a miniature australian shepherd. They are loyal, intelligent, eager to please, love to be with their owners. But they are medium to high energy dogs that requires mental and physical activities.

I'm not into chiuahua's. They seem to bark a lot and are aggressive towards strangers. I think pugs are cool looking. What about mini-pinchers?

I have a male and a female chihuahua. 11 weeks ago, my female gave birth to three puppies. We were going to sell them, but changed our mind and decided to keep them all. They are great little dogs, with alot of love to give. They are very loyal to their owners and alot of fun. Believe it or not, they are also great little watch dogs. Good Luck!!! I hope this helps a little!!!
