I am starting to come down with a really bad cold, and whenever I swallow something, i hear a crackling noise in my ears. Could this be a sign of a ear infection?

That just means your head is stuffy and your ears are plugged it could lead to an ear infection but its not one yet. If you swallow and it hurts or you hiccup and it hurts thats the first sign, then they hurt all the time, then they leak clear liquid.

I had clogged ears (my hearing sounded like I was under water) for 3 of my pregnancies...early on during my last one, I got an ear infection and my eardrum ruptured!! It was a pain as horrible as labor, I swear!!
If you think it's an infection, you must act fast because they can progress very fast...for me the onset of ear pain to my eardrum rupturing was maybe 12 hours.
If it begins to hurt, go to the dr. ASAP...you can take antibiotics while pregnant, but no steroids--they tried to give me one and thankfully I found out the day before that I was pregnant. Just be sure they know you are expecting

Good Luck

Changed answer due to addition details : I see you mentioned a sore throat and being pregnant so go to the doctor and make sure you do NOT have strep. This is something you want taking care of cause it is not good for pregnant moms or the baby.

It could be an infection, but it could also just be fluid in your years. If your balance is really off, I'd go see a doctor-- ear stuff cand efinitely affect your balance. If your snot or phlegm are yellow or green, see a doc- means you probably have an infection of some sort.

If your throat is red then you have inflamation in your eustation tubes not doubt. The crackling is congestion. Don't over blow your nose or you will irritate things more.

No, usually when you get sick you get fluid behind you ear drums. Take something to clear out the fluid like sutafed.

Sounds like you have a build up of fluid, due to your cold. A decongestant may help.
