? If you mean the Battle of Gettysburg it was because Gen. Lee under the direction of Southern President Jefferson Davis needed a victory in the North to try and persuade the people in the North to pressure President Lincoln to sue for peace with the south. It would also have given European countries better reason for dealing arms to the Southern States.
If you mean what caused the Civil War or war "Between the States" it was due to several issues. Most of the Southerners were in it for what they considered to be States Rights. However many wealthy officers in that war were fighting for the right to keep slavery alive. They made huge profits for buying and selling slaves. They also had many cotton and sugar plantations where they worked the slaves that they owned. But slavery was only one of the issues.

I've never heard it called that. The Battle of Gettysburg was a battle fought in the American Civil War ( War Between The States ). Perhaps this site will help.

Gettysburg was just one battle in the American Civil War. An important battle, one of the few major defeats for Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia, but still just one battle.
Go to the Wikipedia and look up "American Civil War".

There was no GETTYSBURG WAR ! !
There was The American Civil War (1860-1865) of which, the battle at Gettysburg, Pa. was one battle. I learned that in 6th grade history class.
Some people (like you) should do more web-searching to find your answers. It's a lot more fun when you find your own stuff, and you can then examine what you find and perhaps learn from it.
BTW - I "thumbs-downed" your question.

The cause was blunder and miscalculation. RE Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was trying to get the Union army to attack it during his invasion of the north. The Union General (Meade) was trying to keep his army between Lee's and Washington DC. Gen. Meade picked ground to defend miles to the south of gettysburg.
As it was, Heth's Division of Ewell's Corps stumbled into union pickett line of Buford's calvary. Lee had express orders not to engage, unfortunately, both sides brought up their armies. Lee ended up on the short end of their 'blind' collision, as the Union army held the high ground south of Gettysburg...the battle.
true story.
