They should give advice and guidance..which should be seriously thought about and listened to. As much as we hate to admit it, parents are more experienced than us and have picked up a lot of useful knowledge thru out their years.
But ultimately that actual choice should be up to the student, absolutely.

none, they aren't going to be the ones who do that for the rest of their lives, they can guide the child to what the child wants to do, but ultimately it's should be 100% the child choice.

none...just be there for them and help direct when questions come up
