Because it's an expression. Why watch a movie with dragons in it if you don't believe in dragons? Why talk about hobbits if you don't believe in hobbits? Why call someone a "troll" if you don't really believe "trolls" are real?
Because to speak of something doesn't mean you believe in something. To speak of a concept doesn't mean the concept exists or that you personally think it does. It just means that the concept can be conceived of in imagination.

Because it is used as a profanity instead. Just like when Jesus' name is used in vain. They are asking God to damn whatever is not happening for them. Be damned it won't happen, but not because of God damning it lol. God won't damn anything, thats our job, so they continue to not believe in this our Divine Source.
Just because they do not believe in God outside of themselves does not mean they do not believe in their own spiritual connection. In order to not believe in 'something' one has to have 'seen' 'felt' or 'experienced' it first in order to make that souls choice in the first place.
By the way, all walks of life use this profanity, religious or not.
Blessings be yours in love and peace

I suppose for the same reason that Christians celebrate "Easter" although nobody believes in the pagan spring goddess "Eostre" anymore. Language may stay the same even though meanings shift. "God damn it" is just swearing, nothing more.

Wow. That IS a dilemma. Are you sure they do that? Gooooollly! That's soooo weird! Well, if the say "God," then they MUST believe in Him, right? Those hypocrites! ... But wait a minute .. then why are they called "atheists?" Are they just foolin'? Aw shucks, and here I used to think they were evil and doomed to hell. Well, thanks for straightening me out!

Because they really do believe in God...it is some kind of justification for a dilema of thier psyche in trying to form some kind of rational basis to not believe in God...very lame for one who professes to not believe in God to use such a statement...very lame

Because it's a figure of speech.
Why do Christians say Holy SH**? Do they believe it to be a gift from god?

It's just a reflex; nothing intentional. Not believing in Him means they aren't trying to be offensive.
