I think with a lot of dogs, they understand key words, but they tend to interpret more by the tone of voice. This is why our trainer says always to use a happy voice when working the dog. Much more likely to get them to do what we want this way.

Dogs do learn words, yes. Outside, bed time, bone, cookie, go for a ride. Your dog will learn whatever you teach it by repetition. They can learn to associate the big thing outside with round black things with the word "car". Mine know what it means when I tell them we're going on the boat, or going swimming, going to Grandma's house. These are things we do all the time with our dogs and we tell them every time what we're doing.

They also respond to tone of voice. It may seem like they understand every word, but really, your dog only understands the specific words, commands that you use repeatedly.

Yes I think so. I have 2 dogs and they only come when their specific name is called and my husband has been overseas for a while and when I ask my dogs Wheres Daddy? They quickly go to the door and sit there and start looking around and then start wimpering like they miss him. I think they understand a lot more than people give them credit for.
