There is not enough information here. But yes, if you JUST hurt your knee (within 24 hours) then put ice on it & elevate it for about 15 min. If it was hurt a few days ago then ice probably won't help & the swelling has already set in. When you put the ice on your knee, first you should feel intense cold, then burning, followed by an aching, & finally numbness. When it gets numb, you can take the ice off, but keep it elevated & don't walk on it right away. If you have a lot of swelling & inflammation, make sure that you sleep with it elevated too. If it stays that way & is extremely painful, make sure that you see a doctor.

To relieve pain and get rid of swelling, yes! If you feel that it's a injury you can't deal with, go see a doctor. Make sure to elevate, rest and also put pressure on to help with the swelling. Keep ice on it for 20 min. then take off for an hour or two. Repeat as much as possibile for next 24-48 hours.

You will have to ice it for 20 mins each and every two hours all day to support scale back swelling and soreness. Heat could develop the movement to that field and in flip develop your soreness and swelling.

That's what people usually do. If you feel you don't need it, don't , but overall i'd stay off it a bit if the pain is ridiculous.
