Very good question...There were many writers around at the time who were writing in a far more contempary style.
I think he is so recognised because of introducing so many words into the English language and also, he wrote a wealth of material. Just by sheer volume he wrote more in his lifetime than other writers of the period.

Will Shakespeare, for some remarkable reason, and in the most extraordinary way, always seemed to be able to hit the "situational nail" smack on the head, dead center, with a brevity and clarity that just about everyone, from the sharpest mind to the simply average one, was able to grasp. His words and phrasing always had such grace, and flow, and poecy, whether he was making his audience laugh, or making the hair on the back of their neck tingle. Down through all the generations of time, from the period of his life, to the present, those who have portrayed his brilliant plays through any of the characters, and those who watched their performances, no matter what their social or intellectual status, never failed to come away "knowing" that they had "touched greatness". I can think of no other single writer who has had that effect on so many.

His stories have universal themes that have been repeated over and over even up to now.
For example:
10 Things I Hate About You = The Taming of the Shrew
West Side Story = Romeo and Juliet
The Lion King = Hamlet.

He was one of the few poets who made it into some hall where famous poets' works and stuff are put. He can write an iambic pentameter (a type of poetry very very hard to write), with rhymes and he did that for many of his stanzas. His numerous plays and such had almost every component in them to make them likable for everyone. That's just what I think. But he is not really considered greater-- he is just one of the best.

nicely imagine about it, most of the highschool curriculum revolves round Shakespeare. he's a legend because he lived so before, yet to modern his performs, and his works are taught. besides the undeniable fact that, i in my opinion don't love Shakespeare because i think like i'm interpreting a overseas language

i agree with many of the things already written. one thing that i would like to add is that he is also fun to quote. many people do.
example
"To be or not to be, that is the question."
"give every man thine ear but few thy voice"
"this above all, to thine own self be true"
these are all just from Hamlet. shakespeare has a million other quotes too that you will probably recognize.

Good publicity; and he is a great writer. The two together = his fame.

If you have to ask this question, you haven't read enough of any English writing. Once you are well-read the answer will be obvious.
