that says "conversion in process"..nothing happens. When I get an attachment from an email, and click on download file and then click on run either nothing happens and I can't see the file or I get a box that says conversion in process and nothing changes. What is wrong? How can I fix this? Once in a while it works and I can see the attachment file, but usually not. Thanks

No. Microsoft Word is not free.

It's possible that you can open the document with Wordpad. The very basic word processor that comes with Windows. I'm not sure if you need to have Word installed before Microsoft will allow you to do it.

If you want to try, there are two ways:
1.) Right click on the file icon. Chose the option that says Open With. Then look for and choose Wordpad from the list of programs that is displayed.
2.) Open Wordpad. This is usually in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories. Then click File > Open. Change the drop down menu saying "Files of type:" to show "All Files". Then find the file you are trying to open.

Otherwise, you can find a free "office suite" at:

Or you can use the less expensive Star Office:

Both of these will display slightly differently than Microsoft Word/Office will. However, if you just want to read a document, it will probably not be a problem.

You have to buy word. You can get it from somewhere like BestBuy or Office Depot. It is kinda expensive but depends on your need and uses. Just different for everyone. I think it is sold seperately sometimes and sometimes in the office suite which has word excel powerpoint among others. No price idea because it has been 5yrs or so since I looked into it. On yahoo mail, you can preview the document to see what it looks like then copy paste it into something else.

Try Open Office. It's free, comparable to Microsoft Office, ( I think it's better), Should work fine for you.

first of all, becareful opening any attachments, make sure you trust the person sending the attchment or know what it is before you open it.

Attchments can contain viriuses.

Secondly, if you need a free program that can open word documents, check out open office:
