I know of several people who ended up not being able to work and on disability (I think that's what you're talking about when you say DLA?) because of the disease I have, which is Celiac Disease.
It has a lot of the same symptoms of IBS, and they're saying now that people with a diagnosis of IBS should be tested for celiac, which is often misdiagnosed as IBS.
I was a stay-at-home-mom when I was having the worst of my celiac symptoms before I was diagnosed. If I had to work at that time, I have no idea how I could have possibly been able to work. There would have been no way. So, your question about disability is an appropriate one and shows how bad your symptoms are.
Heres an information page about celiac by the National Institutes of Health. http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/
If that starts ringing some bells here are some message boards about celiac you can visit.

If you have IBS you are not disabled you just have a health condition ( like migrain or Hypertension). However, if the IBS has caused other problems then you could be well classed as having a disability. I have had IBS all my life and worked up until retirement age.

DLA is essentially for people whose medical condition means that they rely on others to help care for them. IBS does not fall into that category - and is within your personal management, so you would not succeed in getting it.

My husband has real bad pain with IBS, however docs won't give him anything for the pain. He has been to the hospital for check ups on various occasions. He has to go in 2 weeks for a colonoscopy, and they will still send him home with no medication. This health service STINKS. Why does he have to suffer in pain, why won't they give him anything ? it's not fair.

I didnt know you could claim anything for IBS, but then no-one would normally tell you and it would probably be very difficult to prove you had it.
