I did today, I bought a really cute cake tin for a friend but I've decided I like it too much to give away. Am I being very selfish? I could buy another one for her, but the rest are different patterns and not as nice as mine...

Not really. One Christmas my aunt was being a ***** so I kept her present. I forgave her and got her something else but she was being a ***** again so I gave it to someone else.

All the time, but I always make sure to either buy another of the same item or something similar, like a cake tin with a different pattern.
Sometimes, I will decide on two things I could get for someone one, like either Item 1 or Item 2. If I cant find Item 1 then I will get Item 2. Sometimes, I got Item 1 and decided I liked it to much so got Item 2 for the recipient.

I go through this every year at Christmas. Sometimes I buy 2 of something if I know in advance I'll likely keep it (that after several years deciding to keep something then scrambling for a gift!)

I've bought something before and then kept it for myself. It was so beautiful, and I decided the person I intended to give it to would not appreciate it. I felt guilty about keeping it for a while and then thought, "Why do I feel guilty? She doesn't even know about it." Sometimes (7 years later) I still wish I would have gotten 2 and given one to her and kept one for myself.

I've been tempted before. I guess it's not the worst thing in the world but it is a little selfish. You never know though maybe she'd like another design even better anyways...

I have been very tempted, but no I have not done it yet. But I understand where you are coming from. And no it doesn't mean you are selfish. And besides, that person will never know. Just all of us here on Yahoo will.

I do it all the time and usually I buy the same exact thing for the person. If it is not there, i buy it in another color. No it is not selfish. Don't worry.

well i hope your friend doesnt find out because then you will be in deep trouble but go out and maybe bouy her something different what she doesnt know wont hurt her that is what i say. and dont fell bad its your money and if you saw it and it wasnt your friends b-day you would have of baught it for your slef anyway. so dont worry about it.
