I know there are Chinese schools for kids whose parents want them to get a formal Chinese education in the US. But, can adults attend special sessions of these? Or is there such a thing as a Chinese community center, with lessons for adults?

You might try to barter for lesson tapes in your local paper, and I would second the library suggestion. You might practice by talking to your local chinese restaurant owners or employees, and you could contact your local community center, especially if you live in an area that has chinese immigrants who are learning english. Offer to trade practicing mandarin for chinese. However, if you do this, go to the library or book store and make up a lesson plan for yourself, decide what you want to learn and stick to the schedule. Even if you cannot find a text for chinese, you could use one for any language to set up a program for yourself. If you don't mind spending a little money, buy a Mandarin Phrase book, and use that as a begginers model.
