You need a new program, I think. Use this program: http://www.abbyy.com/

It's a character recognition software program. If you want to edit it as a text document, you'll have to reformat it into one.

If you don't like the look of ABBYY, check out this link for other character recognition software downloads, some free: http://www.bumpersoft.com/Graphics_and_Drawing/Scanning_and_Optical_Character_Recognition/
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=optical%20character%20recognition&tag=srch

Here's the explination of what this software is and does (from Wikipedia): Optical character recognition, usually abbreviated to OCR, is computer software designed to translate images of handwritten or typewritten text (usually captured by a scanner) into machine-editable text. An OCR system enables you to take a book or a magazine article, feed it directly into an electronic computer file, and then edit the file using a word processor.

Most scanners come with a utility called OCR, which stand for Optical Character Recognition.

While the program works differently with each manufacturer, typically you'll start the program, then use it to scan the document. If it's just text, it's fairly easy. Some come with a proofreader, and you'll likely have to tell the program what language you are using. This will give it a better chance to recognize words.

Most of the programs are better than 80 - 85% accurate, depending on the font used in the document and how flat the page is to the scanner bed. You'll have to edit it to make it completely accurate.

If you have pictures as well as text, most OCR programs allow you to select the level of formatting kept. This also requires that you save the document in a graphics format that retains the formatting.

The reason that you can't edit it from a regular scan is that when you scan it, it's simply a photographic representation of the document, with no information as to what the characters are. You need the OCR to convert it from a graphic to a document.

When opening the scanner software in preparation to do the scan, my scanning software allows you to choose the format the scanned document will be in. The options include Microsoft Word and Paint Shop Pro.

When I select one of these options then choose to start the scan, the document is scanned in as either a Word document or as an Image.

After the document has been scanned in, there is an option / button to 'send the scan' to either Microsoft Word or Paint Shop Pro, depending on which option I chose earlier.

Therefore, the steps are:
- Locate the scanning software.
- Open the scanning software.
- Choose the format you want the scanned document in.
- Scan the document in.
- Check if the document is correct, as there can be numerous problems, including not positioning the document to be scanned correctly.
- You may need to re-scan the document.
- Send the document to the application. For instance Word or Paint Shop Pro.

Check to see if your scanner has OCR capabilities, most usually do but if it's an old scanner it may not. You could scan the document, save it to file, and then right click on the file to see if there are any other programs it will open in. It's difficult to say without seeing your software program options. If none of this works, take it to a kinkos or office copy store and have them scan it. You can buy time using their computers.

If youre going to scan a document and would like to convert that document into microsoft word, you have to covert the scanned document to textpro or text. If you scanned a good text document it will recognize all characters, otherwise you will go through each one until you got all in its normal condition.

Hi there,

It depends on what your trying to do and whether or not you have the right software to do it. If it's a photo you're trying to edit, then scan the document using Photoshop, by importing into Photoshop. If it's a PDF document, you can use Adobe Acrobat to edit, but you need to have the full version of the software to do this. If it's just a sheet with writing that you want to scan with your scanner and then edit, I don't think microsoft Word has what what you need. If you want, send your document to me, and I will convert it for you to text, and send it back. I have full versions of all the right programs.

It depends on the type of document you want to edit. If you want to edit text, you can use an OCR (Optcal Character Recognition) software like the one bundled with Microsoft Office. Many scanners come with character recognition software. If it's an image, just use Photoshop or some other graphics editing program. If you don't have an OCR software, i think you can get a free one from:
