I'm getting my teeth removed next Monday, and will be receiving local anasthetic(sp?). I'm really scared about the procedure. Any tips? I have very bad anxiety normally, and I am afraid I'll freak out while they're taking out the teeth. Also, does anyone know how long the procedure takes if it's not done surgically?

Just relax, the technology they have these days really makes it almost painless. I had to have oral surgery because my wisdom's were pushing my teeth inward. I was in the army and they had no oral surgeon. So they just pumped me up with whatever they used, (Novocain?) and with a laser broke the wisdom's and pulled the pieces out. Sounds primitive but I didn't feel a thing. It took two trips, one week apart. It will be ok, just pray the Good Lord guides the hands of the dentist and everything will be smooth sailing.

I see that you got some very good advice, here. But there is no way of getting around the fact that the procedure will be very uncomfortable. (this word is a medical term for pain.) Sorry, but it is a fact.
Ask if you can bring in some of your favorite, relaxing music.
The novacaine will help. It will help a LOT. If done right, there may be no pain during the procedure, and for that, we can all be greatful. The doctor should also give you a couple of day's worth of pain meds to take home. Probably Hydrocodone. (Vicodin) This is good stuff, and don't be afraid to use it. Especially the first day, after the novacaine wears off.
If the dentist does not give you this medication, or a prescription for it, ask for it. Some dentists just won't do it unless you insist.
One more recommendation: Arrange for a couple of extra days off. You may need it. You may not. But set it up ahead of time if you can, just in case. Either because of the pain, or because of the fuzzy headedness of the pain meds, you won't be having a great time.
Let yourself be miserable for a while. It will pass. Kind of like getting on a roller coaster. You can't get off, but you know the ride will end soon.

You'll do fine, don't worry! You shouldn't feel anything because of the anasthesha, but you may hear stuff that's going on. You'll be groggily when you get up and nasty tasting cotten blood mouth. I never took any pain medicine afterwards, but that's your preference. Make sure to only eat soft foods and clean out the pockets where the teeth were with a syringe. You will be okay, just go to the place of surgery with someone you trust. They should be able to sit in the room with you until you fall asleep. You'll feel better with them talking to you and taking care of you afterwards! Good luck!

To answer the last part of your question. If you don't remove them surgically then wait for them to rot out. Then have the things removed. Ouch!
If those teeth are in good shape and you don't need to pull the wisdom's. Then keep them. You might need them to hold a partial plate in.

If you are nervous, ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as it helps TREMENDOUSLY with anxiety.
If you're really nervous, you can ask them to knock you out instead.
When I had mine out at age 17, they put an IV in me, put a gas mask over my face and asked me to breath deep and count backwards from 10. I made it to 7 (I think) and the next thing I knew, I woke up with pounds of gauze in my mouth and it was an hour later on the clock. Weird feeling, but 0 anxiety.

ask for some nos, to calm you down more. After it's over your feet will tingle a little. But that goes away. buy some ice cream, a new tooh brush, and some mouth wash. Buy some 100% fruit juice. dont smoke for 3 days after if you do. also burn a cd and or take an ipod of some music, it will also help.

I just got mine out yesterday! I got an IV and like the other person said, it was about an hour later I woke up with a lot of gauze in my mouth. I had all my wisdom teeth and fourth others (8 in all). The pain has not hit me yet, but the coldness is getting to it little. But you should tried the IV for your condition.

If you're a masochist, then you're in for a treat! If you think a wax job to remove hair hurts, just wait until you get your biggest teeth yanked out. You usually don't bleed enough to need a transfusion, but give the doctor your blood type just in case.
