For the same reason birds sing at dawn or during the day - to proclaim territory and/or attract a mate. Presumably doing this when the "day shift" are off duty means there is less competition. The nightingale is, of course, so named for doing this. Don't some birds sing during the night in Japan?

Presumably because they're confused by all the bright lights.
That poses other questions, such as :
Do birds that sing at night sleep during the day ?
Can birds suffer from hangovers ?

Strreet lights are the reason.
I watched a pair of Willy Wag tails that would stay up to about midnight around a streetlight and catch all of the insects that would be attracted to it.

They would sing a fair bit while under it too

Seriously, I have 13 birds, My African Grey Parrot "wakes up" at night. He loves to play with his toys then and starts to sing.

He must have heard a Nightingale sing in Berkley Square.

(It is because of the all night bright lights which throw the starlings and sparrows into confusion)..........
