Yes! They are good.... but as with all dogs it requires proper training. I know many people that use German Shepherds as guard dogs.
History and origin: The German Shepherd is a new breed that first appeared in Germany about one hundred years ago. This very smart breed was initially developed for herding but has adapted well to police and military work, search-and-rescue work, tracking, bomb detection, protection work, and guide dogs for the blind.
Description: The German Shepherd stands 22 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 60 and 110 pounds. He has a strong, muscular body and a medium length, coarse shedding coat with a softer undercoat, which needs daily brushing. The color may be black, black-and-tan, golden with black-tipped hairs, or gray with black-tipped hairs. White is strongly discouraged.
About the breed: Considered by most to be the most intelligent and courageous of all dogs, the German Shepherd is one of the most versatile breeds. He is strong, agile, loyal, highly intelligent, and possesses one of the keenest noses in the dog world.

Yes, they can be. But please do your research on the breed prior to purchasing one. Make sure the dog has proper training and that you can control it.
I think also though, that any medium/large breed dog (from a shelter of course) could do the same as a shepherd as long as it loves you. You are your dogs pack. It will protect you.
Dogs sense fear. They can tell the difference when someone is welcome in a home and someone is unwanted by their owner. My little JRT/Beagle loves everyone. But when my neighbor came over one day when no one was home to fix a broken window for me he almost got bit. He said my little 18lb. dog really scared the crap out of him.

No. That's why you have never seen a picture or movie with a german shepherd as a guard dog.

yes they are excellent guard dogs but their origins are as herding dogs, hence their name, the German Shepherd----they are good family dogs, are protective of small children, and also love their families--they are easy to train, but since they are big dogs, they need a firm trainer/owner---i am not sure if they would make a good first dog, but it is worth a try---they also tend to bite when scared so watch out!

Yes..they are. They are great dogs who protect their owners and their families. I had a german shepherd who was over protective of me and my mom trusted that dog so much my dog practically babysat me when I was 1. She would growl at strangers who got too close to me and stand inbetween me and the stranger...and she was just a PUP!
All in all..they are great dogs! I'm considering adopting one since its just me now and I could use a companion!

confident they're yet i'd advice you to ascertain the dogs as a dogs, no longer as a glance after dogs. in case you build a stable relation inclusive of your dogs w/o doing something specific, your dogs would comprehend while it's time to act. i in my view don't think a stable guarding dogs is one that barks at each and every stranger. i think a stable guarding dogs is a dogs that is familiar with once you're in worry and at that 2d flips the swap from huge lovable cuddly beer to the guarding dogs you choose. i've got had 2 organic guarding canines, the only coaching they have been given became obedience and flyball. the two have been very surprising to strangers (they might refuse nutrition in spite of the undeniable fact that) yet (the 1st one had 2 act trice, the only I even have now in effortless terms a million) while they had to act, i actually did no longer would desire to do something different than keeping them to evade injuries. A dogs that growls and snarls at strangers for no different reason than the reality they're strangers is a unfavorable dogs. The dogs that's surprising to strangers (once you enable it) or only stands by utilising your component being impartial except you're afraid/ in threat and that acts by utilising itself at that 2d, that's an incredible guarding dogs and chum. If I have been you, i'd choose for the 2d on the grounds that dogs will shield you with it relatively is existence for no different reason than the bond you 2 have.

For the best in guard dogs, get a Giant Schnauzer. They'll take a bullet for you, eat the bad guy for a snack, and lay his bloody carcass at you feet.

They are good watch dogs. Guard dogs have to be trained for that. They will let you know if there is someone around though.
