They are not the same, but you can substitute one for the other if you don't mind the trans-fats in vegetable shortening that are the reason it is a solid and not a liquid.

One is solid and one is liquid. There are times when it matters as to which one you use. You want shortening when you make pie crusts. If in big pinch you can substitute. I know you can use Crisco shortening to fry chicken but I prefer using vegetable oil. There are times when it depends on what you like and in other cases where recipe calls for one it is for a reason so you will have better results.

no, vegetable shortening would be in a solid form and the vegetable oil is liquid. it would make a difference in the article you are baking so dont substitute one for the other

No, it isn't. Vegetable shortening is sort of like a bonding agent; it keeps all the ingredients closely stuck to each other. Vegetable oil just keeps the ingredients from close bondage, and prevents sticking to the pot or pan you are using. You should NOT substitute one for the other.

Vegetable shortning is a solid an vegetable oil is liquid. If the recipe calls for vegetable shortning you can NOT substitute the liquid. Your recipe would not turn out right.

I've substituted a stick of melted butter for veg oil in a brownie box mix before, as well as milk for water. Use the same amount. It turned out good.
