it's a USDA product and the government makes companies that package food, have a separate seal to make sure no one puts contaminants in. they government also paid for food manufacturers to have security doors on the plant. we got them last year. it has nothing to do with freshness. they use to be only pop top.

So you've got something to grease your cake tin with.

I presume you find it a pain. Me too. The Americans' marg seems to have a seal under the lid, but ours is just a seemingly useless bit of foil that gets covered in marg. Good question!

It is there so that if someone opens it before you buy it, it is protected. That way, no one can put something harmful in it. If that foil/paper is broken or torn when you buy the better, you should not use it. Sounds silly, I know, but people do mean things like that (ever hear about the cyanide in the Tylenol capsules back in the earlier 80's).

Its stops a discolouration of the top of the marg/butter although this is natural and harmless they still put the paper on top

Dont know but i use it for greasing baking tins if I run out of greaseproof paper
