packing for flight??withdrawing money in nyc?

gawd..as usual.got 2 days to go still doing last minute stuff.lol.have been told though to pack any video cameras or digital cameras or regular film cameras in my hand luggage..........A..so it doesnt get broken or smashed in my main case..........B as apparently when going through xray this can damage the camera?? but yr hand luggage has to go through anyway?? any one know the answer to this?? also iwas told that you can use yr bank card in nyc todraw out cash..am taking some travelers cheques and dollers but didnt fancy carrying all my money around..but then was told by afriend that as us isnt part of the european union apparently you cant do this??.i keep getting conflicting opinions.........

I think x-ray only damages 35 mm film, not digital. The x-rays used for your carry-on luggage is not as strong. If you have really high end professional equipment they can hand screen it. It's best to bring all that as carry-on so they don't get broken still.

I am from the US and used my bank card in Germany, so I assume it will work the other way around.

I'm pretty sure the xray wont damage the video cameras which ever bag you pack em in - people always put laptops through the xray machine and these days without the case! As for the money I think you can withdraw money easy peasy but you will be charged by your bank in UK so whenever you do withdraw cash take out a good hundred dollars or so so you only incure the charge once and stash it in a few different places (eg, bag pockets, suitcase) just in case you are unlucky enough to get robbed you have some back up money! Firstly you can use your English card at any cash machine, depending on what type of card you have depends on if you can use them in shops/restaurants etc beware though your bank will charge every time you use a cash machine to withdraw money. sometimes you need to phone your bank as well just to let them know you are going away and that you will need to use your card.

Secondly you can pack your camera where ever you want suitcase or hand luggage. When I went on holiday a couple of weeks ago I took all my electrical and camera stuff in my hand luggage because I am sure it was safer. If they want to check your suitcase they will just check it without you knowing if they want to check your hand luggage then they do it in front of you so you can make sure all items go back inside safe.

Do you have a credit card? You should be able to use it all over NYC, then when it goes to your bank it will be changed into your currency (euro?) so you don't have to worry about money!

Camera should be fine through xray, a magnetic field would do damage. But I would put it in your carry on bag!

X-ray machines do not damage video cameras, film carmeras, digital cameras, or film. I have had plenty of film (used and unused) pass through x-ray machines with no damage.Take it in your carry on luggage as it is less likely to get to get knocked around.

You can use your bank card overseas if it is branded with the international payment schemes e.g. Visa, Mastercard, Amex. Remember that Switch and Link are UK only payment systems and as such, these cards will not be recognised outside the UK. Notify your bank that you will using your card overseas in case their fraud detection systems detect unusual behaviour and start declining transactions.

Your cameras etc., will be fine in your hand luggage.

You WILL be able to use your bank card in NYC - absolutely no probs - I do it in Washington DC all the time when I'm there. Just take the minimum dollars you need to get through the airport and to your hotel etc., around 100 should do it.
