Vinegar or lemon juice takes away the smell - but then you smell of vinegar or lemon juice. If smelling of onions is a problem, wear rubber gloves when you peel them.

metal does.....you can actually buy a lump of metal shaped like a soap to rub in your hands.............but it is cheaper and is less clutter just to rummage amongst the kitchen utensils for a moment.
