"Cardinal Renato Martino expressed his concern over the matter this week, the first time the Vatican has joined the quickly expanding Europe-wide debate on how wearing the veil affects integration into societies.

Cardinal Martino urged that immigrants must respect the traditions, culture and religion of the nations they travel to. "

His particular focus was on head scarves in Europe rather than culture in the US, but it seems applicable to all cultures.

What do you think?

I'maCatholic - thanks. That's my personal view, as well, and embodied in our Constitution, as it happens. The good Cardinal disagrees, I guess.

Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, a Vatican expert on immigration, also added that it was important to discuss with Muslims and allow them to understand the consequences of some of their religious traditions, and that they might not be positive in the societies in which they now find themselves.

I find this just a tad hypocritical after the Catholic Church's
opinion on the illegal aliens from Mexico to the USA.Since most are Catholic. It seems he needs to address his own parishioners first.
Of course people need to adapt to their new country, that's simply common sense but I
find this a very bias situation.

An immigrant coming to a new country should respect and comply with its ways, or they should not immigrate.

The cardinal assumes that Muslim immigrants to Europe desire assimilation, when there is no evidence of that. It is an invasion, and they will not heed any comments by a Catholic cardinal.

In the Vatican II document, DECLARATION ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, DIGNITATIS HUMANAE (Human Dignity), the Church states:

The human person has a right to religious freedom. This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits.

Unless this is the exception "within due limits," asking someone to dress in a way that is against their religion would seem to go against this declaration.

With love in Christ.

The Vatican should shut up, it is protected by a wall so can't the U.S. The treaty that the Mexican and the Americans agreed upon states we can build a wall to protect our country.

I agree that muslims should adjust to the Catholic religion.

I thought it was truly hypocritical. Muslims have to respect other cultures, but not Catholic immigrants. I'd be shocked if they themselves didn't see the irony, it's so blatant.

I think that is sound advice. The old saying "When in Rome, do as Romans do" applies.
