I had the same problem once,
wound up going to the Braynt Park grill, in Bryant park
the place is really nice, make you feel like you are in a real upscal place
then you get the menus, and it is normily price, Cheap for the city, you know 16 - 32, but there is only one thing that is that high, most thing range in the 18 - 20 range
the servie was good. the place is not perfect, for that I would go get the lunch (25 pre fix at Gotham) but good and solid, and they didnt mind us sitting for hr's
plus they can take big partys

I loved the Bankok House on 46 btwn 8 & 9. It's small and quaint and the food is devine. Prices a very reasonable. But for a group of 10, make reservations. As I said, it's small, but well worth it.

There's a place called Frank's on Third Ave around 4th street. Its on the left if you're walking south, and has two other restaurants on either side. Im not sure exactly of the cross st but to be safe lets say from 6th st down to Houston. There are two rooms, its pretty cosy, and one has a bar in it. The food is awesome (italian, but not the standard chicken parm crap you get in America) and reasonably priced. Get the fresh mozarella and tomatoes for appetizers. Yum.

The Chop House if you like steak and homemade beer. There are many different things other than steak to choose from. Try the buffalo ribs (the real buffalo not the chicken kind) The restaurant was featured on food tv a couple of years ago, and my wife took me there for my birthday. For NYC the prices are reasonable. Try restaurant row (street name) and walk down that street to see many other restaurants, (its off of times square) Happy Birthday

I just went to a cute little Italian place in the east village called Paprika. Lovely...and cheap. Beer and wine only. Small...may want to make reservations. I think it was on St. John's Place.

I am a big big fan of "Planet Hollywood" it is a tiny bit pricey but the atmosphere and all that movie memorablia is really cool. If your a music lover theres also "Hard Rock Cafe" which is really cool too, very good food.
