Do not make it too simple or common. Stay away from Smith, Brown, James, Jones. You do not want to be confused with others who might have the same name. Make it easy to pronounce and spell. It can be a shortened form or anglicized form of your name if you are an American. Many immigrants took last names that were easier to pronounce and spell when they came to America because people could not pronounce the names. Look at someone admirable, make sure the name is not associated with someone bad or something bad. A last name can also be a city or state that has good connotations. Dakota, York, Maine, Jordan, Houston, Dallas, Niles, etc.

If you are a Male, it is not such a good idea to change your last name. Perhaps you can tell me that the Movie Stars does it all of the time. But, you might lose your family connection and in years to come, your children might not be able to trace their heritage. This name change can effect your entire generation.

Whatever you choose, consider how it sounds with your first name. Some names just don't sound good together, and others can make an unintended pun (Justin Case, etc.)
