Good values can be learned from parents, teachers, ministers, etc. The problem is that many do not put what they have learned into practice. I know many good people who don't attend church, and I know several scoundrels that do attend church. What we need to realize is that hell will be full of "good people", and many of the people we see at church every week won't make it to heaven. Being good or not what gets us to heaven; being saved is. I do think going to church does help instill good values as well as being raised by parents who practice good values.

Dear Secret Asian Man,
i guess it depends on how you define "good values". If you are talking from a Christian perspective Jesus himself said, no one is good but God himself. So if you are seeking to live by Christ's standards- church and fellowship are absolutely essential.
If you are looking to live by standards that are acceptable for society- i wont' say that church is the only way to get good values.
But as you've learned i'm sure in your Sunday School- one doesn't get to Heaven or have a relationship with God by the merit of their own good works, but only through the work of Christ on the cross. So i guess it depends on what you are basing your standard of "good values" on.
Hope that helps. Feel free to email me with any questions, etc. nicksterlee@yahoo.com
Kindly,
Nickster

Yes - it creates an illusion that Church and religion is the only place to find morals. It also creates the illusion that God exists too.

No. You will learn values over time and from experiences. Just doing things because you are told will mean nothing. Things that you learn on your own will stay with you the rest of your life.

It does. But the illusion is just that - illusion. The church is full of liars and cheaters, just like the rest of the world. Its about what you take from where you are.

No.You learn good values from many places. You may have learned a few there, but many other points that makes up you view of morals probably came outside of the church.

I learned mine from my parents and reading comic books, really got love those superheros and their willingness to help and save people. I think everyone should take a lesson from Captain America or Spider-man. One of the reasons I went into the military, because it was my way of helping out. Do you think that anyone who does not read comic books is incapable of having the urge to save people who are in trouble?

Not really. People can have good in them as non believers do. I have seen in some of my non Chrisitan friends more Christ like good features than in some of the OL Christians that gravitate around the internet.

if you follow the "values" of you society then you have "good" values by that standard.... The values of a man made "religion" are just that... and are binding upon the followers of the particular 'religion"..... man's values are defined by man.... God's values are defined by God.... and much harder to follow...but bring much greater rewards that are lasting for all of eternity...
