SR means slow release, which will make it work longer in your body. I have never heard of wellbutrin xr, though I can guess it means extended release, and basically would be the same as the sr.

SR is slow release; extended release is the XR (XR lasts longer).

Probably the patent date, one will go off patent sooner and become generic, and thus cheaper for the consumer. By then, the company will come up with a new way to patent, yet again, the ingredient is in a new form and becomes costly.
