All the energy of motion eventually ends up as heat. It just doesn't seem that way because it takes a LOT of heat to melt just a little snow.

The potential energy that the snowboarder had turns into kinetic energy through gravity. The energy to get to the top of the hill comes from walking or the lift, the walking energy comes from food, the energy for the chair lift comes from electricity. Both of which come from the sun.

The energy of motion is converted into heat. Warming the snow, the air, the snowboard, even the snowboarder!

It's more noticeable if you are dragging your feet on pavement to slow down - then your shoes melt!!

The force of the snowboard stopping goes into the snow that flies up when the snowboarder stops. The rest goes into the earth.
