when wanting to break up with your boyfriend who you live with what is the nice way of doing it?

i have been with my bf for almost 6 years and lives with him for abouut 3. i have been unhappy with the relationship for a long time and want to get out. do i give him 30 days notice of my leaving?
should i wait until after christmas? the reason i ask about the after christmas thing is because he is in recovery from drugs and i dont want him to do something stupid like kill himself or do drugs. i do care about him and do want to stay friends with him. what would i do?

easy just wait til your lease is up and don't renew it...as long as he isn't beating you up, you can stay there but when it's time to sign again, don't and just tell him hey, it doesn't look like we are going to get married so I think that you don't want me in your future and it's time for me to look for my future and stop wasting yours and mine. He's going to do what he wants to do and that's fine...as long as you don't get stalked by him -then you'll need a restraining order...
