Why can so few people spell on this site? I can't read half of these questions! If you're foreign you're off the hook. But really...use the spell checker if you must!

I think it has something to do with self esteem. Some whack-job must have talked to another whack-job at a PTA meeting and they got together and made a badly written petition.

Something like I ___parents name here__ have been butchering the English language for generations. My child has the right to butcher the language the same as me.

The lack of good spelling has to do with the lack of decent education and the huge move to text messaging. It can't be expected that 1 teacher is going to be able to give decent education to a room full of 30 or so students, especially if the students aren't really interested in learning. Text messaging is also hurting spelling because the spelling you see here is a sample of the spelling in text messaging. The fewer characters it takes for the text message, the better, and the faster it goes, but now it's translating over into other writing.

It's true, a lot of people can't spell, but you have to take this into consideration, they say up to 20 percent of our population has dyslexia and/or some sort of reading disability. Reading is intertwined with writing, one helps the other. So next time you see someone can't spell, just remember that maybe it's not their fault, or our educational system. They're doing their best and we wouldn't get frustrated with someone who couldn't walk or has some other disability.

People who say it's "informal communication" don't realize that it's not communicating when other people can't understand you. Grammar, punctuation, spelling etc weren't invented to make some little teenager's life difficult, they exist so that we can communicate our intent clearly and with less risk of misunderstandings. Some folk just like to revel in their ignorance.

Who cares?

The majority of the people here are foreign or kids who think spelling incorrectly is cool.

That's too much mobile phone texting, they get used to the new language and forget the correct spelling.

Lol! It makes for some great reading though. Going over stupid and grammatically violated responses is half the fun on Answers!

I agree. It shows how dumb people are that they don't even use the spell check before they post.

Also, nobody seems to be able to use the correct "their", "there" or "they're".

SERIOUSLY! I cannot stand the questions that are full of misspellings and horrible grammar.

Questions that look like this:

"dur dis boi n he iz all fine n we gon go out, shuld we?"

I would hate to be their English teacher and have to grade their papers! ahh!

I agree, it's nuts. I once replied to a question and wrote every word backwards.
