You just roll wet hair from little sections around your finger, hold down, put hairpins on each side. I use to also do this with strips of clean rags, Just tear strips 2 -3 inches long, 1/2 inch wide or so, lay across a pencil, roll hair onto pencil the way you want curl to go all the way to head, tie ends of rag together. Both of these take practise, but pretty easy to figure out, this makes like spirals.
As for waves, take bobby pins, sweep back wet hair, hold with your hand, push forward a little, pin with hair pin. Keep doing that to desired waves, let hair dry like that. I also do my layered dry hair that way, only you don't have to pin it just hold your hand there and spray with hair spray.

Start by putting alot of gell into your hair. I mean alot. Then, using a comb you press your hair into the wave you want with your fingers. You can use hair pins to hold it in place. Once your hair drys it will be stuck like glue. Pincurls can be done the same way, just wrap the hair around your finger and pin it.

i dont know about pin curls..but i've done this and its worked pretty well.. depending on how curly you want your hair to be: say after you wet you hair in the shower, let it dry so its a bit damp. then take sections of your hair and twist it into little buns and just twist it and secure it by wrapping your hair tie around it tight spray it with hair spray..let it sit for like an hour..or over night and then take it out..and bam! curly hair heh and just spray with hairspray. now if you dont want it very curly, dont make the buns too tight. twist your hair first, and then make it into a bun. kinda like chug li has hers..but you will have little buns all over your head. i've done this many times and its better than curling it with an iron that dries it out.
