I'm an avid viewer of "Miami Ink" about a tattoo shop in America. Quite alot of people have had "In Memory of" tattoos done for many different reasons. I personally think it's a nice way to remember someone you were close to.
You could always have something that you remember your Grandad by, maybe he had a hobby he loved doing or something like that with his initials underneath. Most tattoo shops will do what you want, just look around the area where you live for a decent tattooist. Sorry for your loss, it's always difficult when it's the anniversary !!

What would your grandad think about you getting a tattoo? If you think he wouldn't like it, then don't do it in his honor.
As for you personally, what is your opinion on tattoos? Would this be your first tattoo? If so, are you ready to defend your tattoo? People with even one tattoo get backlash, no matter the reasons. If you think your grandad would approve, and you are confident about it, then get it.
As for what? Intials/name are simple, but research your artist. Not every artist does text tattoos well. Every artist has their strengths and weaknesses (no matter what they tell you). If you want more then just them names or intials, what kinda things did your grandad like to do? Did he like to watch birds? Work on cars? Did he have a favorite quote or a story you could pick a passage from? Pick something that meant something dear to him, that way when you see that tattoo, you remember him for the person he was. You could also get a portrait of him, but that's another thing that you'll need to research alot for, for the perfect artist.
As to where, that depends what you finally decide on, and something that would probably be good to discuss with the artist once you find one.

My grandfather passed away about 3 years ago and I am getting a memorial tattoo done myself. I think if you are close enough or really affected by the death of someone and you want to get a tattoo, then go for it. I would suggest getting something that symbolises your grandfather in some way. I am getting a red rose with thorns on it, with angel wings and a halo on top, with my grandfathers nickname written around it. The thorns on the red rose is for the love, the thorns are for his rough exterior, and the wings and halo symbolise his passing. Just a thought.
Good Luck.

I don't think it is a good idea to have a tattoe because you are stuck with it and you may decide later in life that you do not want it. There are lots of ways to remember your Grandad. Have you thought about planting a special tree, one that you know he would have loved and watch it grow. You will always have the pleasure of the tree and it will always remind you of your grandad.

There is nothing wrong with getting a tattoo as a tribute to your grandad. When my dad (fan of western films) died, my brother got a tattoo on his shoulder of John Wayne from a film still.

sounds like hes already tattooed in your mind, to have a tatoo would only show your devotion to your grandad to others... if you want other people to know that then get one...
the arm is usually where males put there devotion to some one, loved or lost...
if its for you then the chest where it is covered up would be a nice place, to show hes close to your heart...
my grandads annerversary is coming up soon too... (dec 24th R.I.P) and i was thinking the same, but i carry around with me something more sentimental...
best wishes and let me know what you chose!

Yes, it would be nice to have the memory of your Grandad always with you. I think it should be on your arm or shoulder blade with his initials and when he was born and when he passed away.

If you want it done then get it done! you dont even have to have his initils done. I know someone who had a fallen angel done on her back, as thats what her grandad always used to say thats what she was. You just need something to remember him by, Initials could get complicated in later life if there is no mention of who he was. for example people could think he was an ex boyfriend etc. You could get his name done in a different language also my sister in law has her brothers name done in chinese to stop the above mentioned problem and its on her ankle.
Personally i wouldnt suggest getting it done on the top of your arm. on your back, shoulderblade, or ankle would look nice i think.

Yes, I think so. Did your grandad have a fav animal or symbol? Was he in the military or belong to a union have a fav sports team? Anything that he liked that reminds you of him is appropriate.
