You should love him dearly with any size engagement ring.
If you want a huge one start dropping hints that "only" a five carat ring is good enough for an engagement ring "Don't you think?"
It will at least give him a heads up to what you want and maybe give him a chance to run.

I'm not sure how old you are but....for most people in their twenties, a year long relationship doesn't necessarily equal marriage or engagement. I have a friend whose been dating a boy for 5 years and she hasn't gotten a ring yet. I guess you'll just have to subtly hint (I assume you don't want to force him at knife point to buy you jewelry) or wait til he's ready. If you really love him, you'll want him to wait til he's ready.
Until then, maybe just hint enough to make him buy you some kick *** jewelry that's less emotionally loaded.

You cant. when the time is right he will. You may think you are ready for this and you may not be. marriage is sacret and its something that shouldnt be pushed. You have to wait for that special moment. be patient he loves you dearly too, but things like this you just cant rush into. It will come around
