Never got one because I find them to be very not me, but I do them very often.

What you should expect is a clean, safe and professional piercer who is friendly and smart. As far as pain, that's relative, some people will say it hurts, others say its not bad. Overall, all piercings hurt, but for how quick it is, I promise that it won't be bad.

After filling out paperwork and whatnot, you'll have to wash out your mouth with mouthwash and the piercer will examine your tongue for veins or anything that they will need to be aware of (this also includes abnormal lumps or odd tongue webbing). Depending on your tongue, you might not be able to get a piercing in the center and maybe not even one at all, though that last part is rare.

I mark a spot on the tongue, and ask what the person thinks, though not all piercers do that and there isn't really anywhere else it can go, its just so you know what to expect. From there, clamps will be placed on your tongue, the piercer will probably pierce from the bottom up as to not hit a vein or anything and then the jewelry goes in, all in all, its done and over with very quick. You will be asked to rinse out your mouth again.

After you have the piercing done, they should go over aftercare and give you a sheet about this. After 7-14 days when swelling goes down, you go back and they will put in a shorter and more suiting barbell.

During the process, the piercer should explain what is going on and I'm sure you know that they should show you that all the tools and equipment are clean and safe.

Things I have been told to warn others about: avoid foods that are spicy and acidic, start using a new tooth brush immediately, try not to play with the tongue and piercing.

Expect swelling and adjustment to eating for 4-14 days, expect some bleeding, but nothing excessive.

Good luck and if you need more info for the time being go to:

Edit: Someone stated they numb the tongue, this should never be done as numbing often relaxes the muscle tissue which can cause inaccurate piercings. Also, while numb, if something does go wrong, you won't feel it for hours. There is never a need to numb an area to be pierced and if you are that worried about the pain, you wouldn't get the piercing.

I had mine pierced years ago and although it didn't really HURT it was a strange sensation. They mark the tongue, as to where to pierce it at. Then they will clamp it with a pair of hemostats. They will tell you to take a deep breath in and to exhale and when you exhale they push the large hollowed out piercing needle through your tongue. I got really warm afterward and kind of went into shock, I walked outside the shop to get some fresh air and puked. I puked just once and once I did I felt totally fine. The healing process is what hurts when you get your tongue pierced. It will swell up, as I'm sure you know. It will be really hard to eat until the swelling goes down and you have to be avid about keeping it clean. You do NOT WANT YOUR TONGUE TO BECOME INFECTED!!! Rinse your mouth out with Listerine often!! After you eat, drink (anything besides water), or smoke (if you do). Your tongue is the fastest part of your body to heal. Actually anything inside your mouth, heals faster than anything else. You should be feeling the swelling going down in a few days afterward and by the time a week passes you should be pretty good and healed. The downside to having your tongue pierced is that it WILL DAMAGE YOUR TEETH. You may even notice that the top and bottom balls on the barbell will irritate the roof of your mouth and under your tongue. I had mine for about three years and then it suddenly started really irritating the roof of my mouth and under my tongue, so bad that i FINALLY just took it out. Good Luck :)

Doesnt hurt at all. Kinda pinches and you'll probly jump a little when he/she clamps it, but it doesnt hurt. I have gotten mine pierced twice and i have a really LOW tolerance for pain. I had mine numbed the 1st time & did it without the numbing the 2nd time and it still didnt hurt. You'll drool a lot though! Suck on ice for the first 2-3 days to keep swelling and discoloring down.

ive had mine pierced twice and neither time hurt very much, its more like a pinching feeling but it happens really fast. mine didnt bleed at all, but be prepared for your tongue to swell ALOT for the first few days. I kept a bottle of listerine with me all the time and every time i ate or smoked i used it. good luck.....you will do fine.

i dont have my tongue pierced but i have 8 others. i heard it hurts. but honestly, what piercing doesnt hurt! lol

good luck tomororw! just make sure you follow the cleaning instructions. my old friend had it doen and a co-worker has it too. they say to suck on ice to keep the swelling down. and its weird to eat and talk for the first week but you get used to it. but change your jewelry when its healed!! (have the piercer so it!) so you will have less of a chanc of chipping your teeth!!!!! =)

look at these =)

take a look at the risks too (at the homepage) and look for chipped teeth or something.
good luck and take care of it! =)

YES, it does hurt!! Well the actual piercing doesn't hurt, but after the numbness wears off, it hurts like HELL!!! Your mouth will fill up with blood as soon as they began piercing, and you will feel the needle going through the different layers of your tongue.

Good luck!

It doesn't hurt .. had it done four times but let me tell you a story.. this girl here where i live got her nipple pierced and a month down the road she noticed a ichy feeling so she just assumed that it was healing . so another month went by and she noticed a little rash but she just figured it was from her bra. well all this time went by and she never told her mom . it got so bad that she couldn't ignore it anymore told her mom and they went to the doctor . he told her that she had a flesh eating desease from the piercing,, they tryed to make it better but it only got worse she is dead now all because of a piercing. you can get that flesh eating desease in you tonge to it is a fungus that grows.... but hey it doesn't hurt to get your tongue pierced... i will never do it again afer seeing what it can do.
