It all depends from where you are flying, It can take from eight hours to twelve/fourteen hours. The flights are good the staff is very frieldly. Braziliams are very nice people. If you want to save money do not travel on holiday season. Tickets to Brazil can be more expensive than tickets to London. Brazil is a hot travel destination. You do need a visa. You must apply in the braziliam consulate in Miami, or NY, or California. Again it depends where you are. They will give a Visa minimum 3 years maximum 10 years.

source. Me. I am a Braziliam

If you fly from Miami, about 8 hours to Rio or Sao PAulo. If you fly from an adjacent country, it could be as short as 15 minutes.

Brazil is about the size of the US.

Definitely can't tell you since you didn't specify where you are flying from. Yes, you do need a tourist visa if you are an American national. No, "Flaming Baby Head", credit cards won't work as a tourist visa.

Yes you need a Visa because your country is not a friend of mine. People from Mercosul don't need a Visa. Be a better country and you won't need a Visa.

Actually, I can't accurately answer since I don't know where you're flying from.

Mastercard and American Express are acceptable alternatives to Visa.
