There are places for free speech. This site is used by a lot of kids and that has to be atken into consideration. Questions which are racist, adult in content etc SHOULD be removed to protect them. there are other more appropriate places to discuss those matters...:D

No, it's not. Like it or not there are kids on this site, and they don't need to see all the stuff that's on here. Yes, their parents should be monitoring them, but that's not what you asked.
"You get censored for being abusive to other people, but that's just a step away from losing free speech". HOW? I have a right to speak openly, but I don't have a right to threaten to kill anyone, be it a group of people or an individual. I don't have a right to stalk someone, or threaten to stalk someone. Everyone has a right to feel safe where ever they are. That's a human right. Free speech is a privelage. Abuse it, and the state could enforce more laws.

There is a BIG difference between the two...
The way freedom of speech works is that YOUR freedom to express yourself ENDS where my freedom to be free from abuse begins...
Censoring negative or abusive (and generally pointless) posts is a far cry from losing freedom of speech...
The real worry is when you are expressing yourself and your ideas in a constructive and NOT-negative or abusive way and you are getting censored... That is when the real trouble starts...
Just remember, you should always have the freedom to express yourself. What do DO NOT have is the freedom to abuse others and anyone who tries to put the two together obviously doesn't understand that.

First you must realize we do not have the 'free speech' you believe we have in this country. If you yell FIRE in a public room and people die because of the rush to leave the room and it found out there was no fire you can be tried for murder.
So yes, SOME censorship is a good, thing. I think in the politically correct world we have gone a little too far with this "you insulted me" mentality.

No, its not a step away from freedom of speech. Cencorship is an attempt to make sure the information that is presented is appropirate for the age group of the audience. If you can't get your point accross without being abusive or cursing then you should not type it. Put more thought into your answer. Construct the comments well and you will be fine. No one cencorship should not be for intelligence but ignorance.

...It can be beneficial.
...Yes - we enjoy free speech, but are you allowed to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre? No, of course not, it could cause loss of life - most everybody has enough brains to understand that.
...What value does profanity have on this site - none that I can think of...it mainly shows a lack of decent vocabulary, besides being filthy and unpleasant to the reader. It's not hard to clean up the language.
...I complained because one guy's nickname on here was so depraved and profane, I couldn't repeat it - I can't believe this guy didn't know better.
...As for the long Bible passages that seem to annoy some, why don't you just skip over them? You don't have to read them.

you can abuse freedom of speech
you can abuse censorship
so the answer is it depends.
if somebody verbally violates the right of others, e.g. by inciting to violence against a person or a group of persons censorship can be a very good thing.
If it is used to suppress opinions which do not violate the rights of other people it is probably a bad thing.
Your own personal rights do not supersede the rights of somebody else.

I guess I see this site as similar to being in someone else's house. I am free to say whatever I want outside of those places, but here I am a guest and should respect their rules - whether it is removing my shoes, using polite language in front of their little ones, or not screaming insults at other guests.
There are ways to fully express your ideas without being abusive.

Self-censorship is certainly a good thing.
Abiding by a stated code of conduct is entirely acceptable under the law.
Government censorship, except in the case of national security, is not a good thing.

The First Amendment doesn't entirely apply in here, because we're no longer in America. We're in Yahoo!land.
Cyberspace is an alternate dimension all to itself, where everything you say is costing some moderator money. If the mod doesn't like what you have to say, your words can be completely erased from existence. Unlike in America where you CAN say whatever the hell you want, you have to be careful about what you say when using a private company as a medium.
And if you're saying something so offensive as to get your comments removed, you need to learn some tact so you don't repeat your words in real life and get yourself lynched.
