* Voice lessons are not a bad idea.
You can learn how to protect your voice, and
how to develop your best range.
If you go through a local music school or church music ministry, you might find a graduate student willing to give you a few lessons.
* Sing with a church choir to learn enunciation and diction,
and to practice singing in tune and following music. If you can't read music yet, I strongly urge you to learn. You can't sing notes on pitch if you don't know where they are on the scale. It also makes it easier to correct wrong notes when you understand music, and know if you are off by a half step or flat or sharp.
* Pick up an instrument such as guitar or piano. You can learn more about music and pitch and scales this way. Go to a music store and look at their instructional books that come with DVD.
* Try out for a musical at a local theatre. Learning to sing and perform on stage requires the right projection so you don't damage your voice. Support comes from your diaphragm, not screaming from your throat or your head voice. (Other hints: Do not coat your throat with milk before singing, or restrict your voice with lemons. NEVER sing when you have a cold; you will risk putting permanent nodules on your vocal chords. Do not smoke unless you want that sound to your voice more than you want to avoid the risk of lung, throat or mouth cancer. You need to warm up your vocal chords by practicing scales before rehearsing or performing.)

So a good choir or musical director can teach you those skills so you don't damage your voice by abusing it. You can ask them for references for a good music coach, or a student willing to teach.

Note: Once you know how to use your voice correctly, and are not developing bad habits that can damage your vocal chords, if you want to work on your style, pick a singer whose style you like, and imitate that. Be careful because many singers are not professionally trained and have damaged their voices that way.
I would study singers with operatic training, such as David Byrne(?) of the talking heads, Linda Ronstandt, and Mariah Carey.
If you like other styles, I would make sure you check with a vocal coach how to achieve that effect without damaging your voice.

You have to get some professional training, even if it's just a short spell of singing lessons to set you on your way.

Whatever you think your voice sounds like, be assured it sounds completely different to your audience. What sounds lovely within the resonating spaces of your head doesn't always come across to the listener.

You need to go to a teacher who can improve all aspects of your voice, including breathing and posture, and make sure that you aren't forcing things which can cause problems later.

Then you need to do some regular singing! Joining a choir is a great idea, to give you the opportunity to mix with other singers and pick up tips from them and the corus mster/conductor.

after years of singing, and acting, to train yourself, you need to concentrate on breathing techniques, using the diaphragm and constantly every day 2 times a day, going over all scales to broaden your vocal ability, if you go out of your vocal range, it will hurt. Basically, your voice is an instrument that needs care and the ability to sing is not taught to you it comes naturally. Singing is a gift and if you abuse that gift then you will pay for it in the future. I have been singing since I was 2 years old. I still sing constantly and I'm now using my vocal abiliy in other ways, I am now an actress. Good things come to those who wait and have patience, it takes a while but eventually you will get there. dont forget rest relax and have fun. Oh and Good Luck

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/lbsEu an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.

Try using your abdomen to sing but not your breathe.
Then you may become a marvellous singer.

Wish you the best of luck.

depends on how old you are. Women's voices can be developed through college. Shouldn't take voice lessons until at least junior high. Singing in a choir is the best way.

you cannot without professional help. it's not just practice that makes you better, but the right kind of practice. if you practice the wrong thing, you'll only be really good at singing incorrectly. well...i didn't take private voice lessons. i joined my church choir, which is actually proficient, unlike most church choirs with their god-awful screeching and incompetent music directors. find a good one, who will actually teach how to sing.
