Wonderful dog, the Bichon!
Fleas! Horrid creatures! Not only do you need to kill the critters from the poochie, but also the environment. Believe it or not, sprinkle salt on your carpet. All over the carpet, like your seasoning a good steak. Vacuum in 7 days then repeat. The first 7 days kills the adult fleas, the second 7 days kills the hatchlings.
Wash her bed, treat the furniture. And above all Treat the yard. There are 2 types of flea control the vets sell. Try Advantage Flea control for dogs. Also, there is a pill that makes those boogers drop off dead in minutes. (I forget what it's called)

The most important and effective solution is to put a flea control treatment on your cat to stop the fleas at the source. Advantage works well. When the cat is treated, the main food source for the fleas is eliminated because they can't jump on the cat anymore. Then get some Sevendust (purchased in the lawn care section of any home improvement or general goods store) and put some in the dirt collection cup in your vacuum. If your machine uses disposable bags, you can pour some Sevendust on a piece of paper and use one of the attachments to suck it into the bag. Do NOT do this with a vacuum that doesn't have a post-motor filter (most do). Then vacuum your entire house, including the furniture and mattresses, and UNDER the furniture. The Sevendust kills the fleas so they can't just hop out of the vacuum. Empty the dirt container outside, as far from your house as possible because the eggs you sucked up will still hatch. The cat can't bring the fleas back in when they hatch if it has been treated. As a follow-up measure, you might also want to steam clean the carpets and upholstery. It will guarantee that no flea eggs are left in the fibers. While you're doing this, you'll want to wash every stitch of fabric in your house, particularly the bed linens. Put color safe bleach in the wash. Eat a lot of garlic-containing foods for a week. It will make you considerably less tasty to the fleas. The ones you don't kill will not be able to bite the cat and they won't want to bite you. They'll be gone in a week. It's a lot of work, I know, but if you're like me, then you're probably willing to do anything to be rid of the fleas at this point.

Be sure you are treating your home and fabrics as well as the monthly treatment for your dog. Frontline (or any of the other topicals) will take care of the fleas on your dog if done properly (this means no bath for at least 2 days before applying it too. It is the oils in the skin that help the frontline spread properly and if the dog is freshly bathed, the oils are not there as they normally would be to do this. You have to do this for more than one month too if your home has become infested with fleas. It not only takes some time to rid your dog, but your home as well. You'll need to get some spray or even a fogger to rid them of your home for sure. If they are in your home, you only do frontline type one month, then your dog will only pick them up again whent he frontline wears off. Fleas can live a long time in your carpets without a host.

The other thing is that if they are present in your yard. This could be because the neighbors cat, who maybe has a serious flea issue, is coming into your yard often. In our case, we don't get critters wandering thru our yard and so we don't have fleas in the yard. But if you do and you cannot control it, then Frontline or other type of flea treatment needs to be part of the regular routine for your dog, just like the monthly heartworm pills.

Call a local exterminator to treat your home...this will take care of the flea larva that are in your carpet. Most likely you will have to be out of the house for a few hours, so this would be a good time to get your dog a bath with flea shampoo...try a self service wash. Go home, wash all bedding, rugs, etc. Once everything has been eliminated, keep a regimen of flea control. Have the exterminator our every spring, and keep up on the Frontline, etc.

The vet can give you a pill that will kill all the fleas in a 24 hour period on the dog now. Then start treating him monthly with a good flea medicine (front line/advantage). I would NOT recommend the cheaper brands sold at Walmart.

I would set off a flea bomb in the house. Read the instructions closely---you and the dog must leave the house for a specified time during the fumigation. Also, you need to wash any bedding the dog uses as the fleas can be living in also.

Try Advantage.... it works better than Frontline. However, those are the only two products available that work well at all. Advantage ...by itself will work without having to treat the house, bedding, yard, bathing, etc. If you have any other dogs or cats, they ALL need to be treated. There is one more product called CapStar...its a tablet that will kill every flea on your dog within 6 hours. It works amazingly well, but only works for that one day. It's kind of like a fleabath in a pill. Try not to bath the dog at all for 2 weeks (at least) after applying Advantage.

There are alot of ways to get rid of fleas but you have to be consistant. Bathe the dog with dawn dish soap and bomb your house with RAID Flea killer and the wait 24 hours and put frontline on your dog. In two weeks the procedure must be repeated again and every two weeks untill the problen is under control then you only need frontline once a month. It will work.

Ok, I have dealt with this very recently:

Adams foggers. They are not available at Wal-Mart or any other grocery store, you need to goto a pet supply store to get them, and they are unbelievably effective. They kill the adult fleas, the larvae, AND the eggs! Use those, one for each room, and that'll take care of the fleas not already on the animal.

Next, switch to Advantage. Works a LOT better than Frontline, and once again, not available at the Wal-Mart, only a pet supply store or Vet will have this. You have to use it EVERY single month.

You should never see another flea again if you follow this.

Here's what I did for Judas:

Get the puppy, strip down, jump in the bathtub, and start shampooing. After you put the shampoo on him and rub it in, let it sit for five minutes. After five minutes are up, start picking fleas out of its fur. Rinse, repeat. Keep doing it until all of the fleas are gone. It will take a while, but it's worth it. Also, use the powder on the floor and furniture in your house. The fleas live in carpet, too. Remember to follow the instructions on the shampoo.

Put salt on your carpet and make sure you're applying the flea medication in regular monthly intervals like the medicine specifies.

Try Revolution instead of Frontline. Worked wonders on my girls.
